Wolverine runners open season at WNC Cross Country Carnival

Polk County’s cross country teams opened their 2023 season Saturday, competing in the 22nd WNC Cross Country Carnival at Jackson Park.

The Carnival attracted hundreds of runners from four states, with teams competing at three different levels. Polk County’s boys competed in the Invitational 5K and placed 18th, with South Carolina powers Dorman, Spring Valley and Greer Middle College Charter taking the top three spots. Landrum finished fourth.

Davis Young led the Wolverines with a 38th-place effort in a time of 19:46.1. Jayln Thomas followed in 46th with a time of 20:08.2.

Karsyn Huskey, returning to competition after being sidelined for a year by an injury and surgery, was the lone Polk female to compete and placed 51st in the Invitational 5K with a time of 26:13.4.

Dorman also won the Invitational girls race, followed by Hendersonville and Spring Valley.

Polk County teams are next slated to be in action on September 8, competing in the Friday Night Lights race held at Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville.
