Courtyard dedication to recognize Landrum Farmers Market leader

LANDRUM—A major contributor to the Landrum Farmers Market will be memorialized with a plaque on the site dedicating a courtyard in his honor.

Joseph “Joe” McLeese Cunningham, Jr. passed away on July 12 at age 86. Landrum Mayor Robert Briggs and Councilman Shannon Dotson raised the idea of honoring Cunningham for his contribution to the Farmers Market.

Born July 3, 1937, in Clinton, SC, Cunningham spent his career in the forest products industry. In 1983, Cunningham co-founded United Forest Products, a company that offers a range of products and services for the lumber industry and its customers.

Cunningham was named Landrum’s Citizen of the Year in 2021, recognizing his role in the Farmers Market and in the community. A Celebration of Life was held for him at the Market on August 5.

The plaque will commemorate the space in front of the market that runs parallel to Hwy. 14 and consists of an open common area with picnic tables as Cunningham Courtyard.

“Joe’s love for Landrum and countless hours that he selflessly devoted to our community and the Landrum Farmers Market, along with his kindred spirit share the perfect element for a wonderful man,” said Landrum Marketing and Public Relations Specialist Tricia Taber. “He was a pillar of the community.”

The City of Landrum hopes to have the permanent plaque installed within the next few weeks.
