On August 5, around 4:30 a.m,Mill Spring Fire Department responded to the scene and discovered a trailer used to transfer waste was fully engulfed in flames. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

Columbus Fire Department was needed to bring in water tankers, because the closest fire hydrant to the transfer station is located on Burt Blackwell Rd. Sunny View Fire Department and Green Creek Fire Department also assisted in extinguishing the fire.

According to Captain Andrew Kegley of the Mill Spring Fire Department, it took nearly two and a half hours to fully put out the blaze and approximately 70,000 gallons of water was used.

“We wanted to put the flames out as quickly and efficiently as possible,” said Kegley on Monday. “There was potential for hazardous waste entering into nearby streams and the atmosphere.”

No injuries were reported during the incident.
