Gas leak reported in downtown Columbus

Residents are asked to avoid the area

 

COLUMBUS—Officials evacuated businesses on Monday in downtown Columbus after reports of a large natural gas leak on Ward St.

Columbus Fire Department and Tryon Fire Department are currently operating on the gas leak. Water is being flown in to suppress vapors within the town limits.

West Mills St. is completely shut down currently, and all businesses in the area have been evacuated. 

Town officials are asking the community to avoid the area at this time.

Columbus Rescue Co. 22, Engine Co. 22 and Tryon Engine 27-3 are on the scene.
