Sue Griffin, originally from Cleveland, Ohio, moved to Columbus approximately thirty years ago, following her two sons and two daughters. She stumbled upon Tryon and fell in love with the area.

“I’ve always been artistic, and a friend asked me if I wanted to do a class in needle felting,” Griffin says. “I was already involved in craft shows, so I started doing craft shows with the wool.”

Griffin had been selling her crafts at Kindred Spirits in Spartanburg, The Garden Patch in Columbus, and at the Tryon Arts and Crafts School.

When Back Alley Boutique and Bud Bar had a call for local artists for their building, Griffin noticed the space next door was available for rent and saw her opportunity. Naked Sheep has been open since January, but Griffin’s son, Greg, just hung the sign for the studio the week of June 19.

“I decided I wanted to have a studio. I’ve always wanted to have a studio,” she says. “I just love what I do.”

Fiber art consists of natural or synthetic materials, such as fabric or yarn. Griffin creates her craft with felt and wool, and most of her work is custom.

Naked Sheep is located at 26 Oak St., and its current hours are Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., excluding Wednesdays when the studio is closed.

The studio’s current website, nakedsheep.art, is currently under construction, and a Facebook shop is planned for the future. For more information or to make an appointment, contact Sue Griffin at nakedsheepfiberart@gmail.com, or 828-440-1470.

Griffin’s work is also still available at the other locations mentioned.
