The Tryon History Museum’s Tales of Tryon, a series devoted to exploring what has made Tryon the special place it is, will continue at Roseland Community Center on Thursday, June 15 at 5 p.m. 

The latest installment will feature Dr. Warren J. Carson, retired professor of English and African American Studies at the University of South Carolina Upstate.

Carson, a Tryon native and lifelong resident, will serve as guide for a “Stroll Through the Eastside,” a 40-minute virtual tour of Tryon’s historically African American neighborhoods east of Trade Street.

Detailing a vibrant and unique legacy that extends well over a century into the past, Carson will lead in exploring a community that was not only residential in nature but served the commercial, religious, educational, social and recreational needs of Tryon’s black citizenry.

Carson, who taught at USC Upstate for 34 years, will touch not only on community leaders and other residents who gave the Eastside its distinctive character but on the institutions and gathering places—including Roseland—that made the community what it was—and is.

Roseland Community Center is located at 56 Peake Street, the corner of Peake and E. Howard Streets. Admission is free, but seating is limited, so plan to arrive early. Parking is available along Peake Street. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

Prepare for an exciting tour of a valuable, but sometimes overlooked, segment of Tryon’s history, conducted by one uniquely qualified to tell its story.
