Practice offers Direct Primary Care to patients

LANDRUM–In traditional corporate primary care clinics, it can be difficult to schedule a timely appointment or speak one-on-one with your doctor, but a family care physician has brought a new, more personalized style of family medicine to the area.

Embrace Health recently opened at 920 E. Rutherford St. in Landrum.

“The way I deliver my full best potential as a physician is being able to take the time I need to focus on the relationship that the patient has with me,” says Dr. Chelsea Burgin of Embrace Health. “It’s like bringing the good ole days into the current days where it was a patient-physician pairing.”

Born in Alberta, Canada, Burgin graduated from Loma Linda University Medical School in California and did a three-year internship and residency at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood, South Carolina. She became a board-certified family physician and worked for Prisma Health in Greenville for 12 years.

But Burgin felt she couldn’t practice medicine the way she wanted to within a traditional health care system. She decided to open Embrace Health in Landrum in May.

“The thing that really makes us different is the accessibility and the accountability,” she says. “I am your personal physician when you need me.”

Embrace practices what’s called Direct Primary Care. Patients pay a monthly membership fee that covers the same procedures and tests you would find in any family care clinic as often as you need them with no co-pays. Insurance kicks in if Burgin orders procedures or tests she can’t perform in her own practice.

“The place where primary care is needed is the everyday stuff,” she says.

While traditional family care clinics serve thousands of patients, Burgin plans to cap the number she serves at several hundred to continue to provide personalized care. She’s offering free “meet and greets” for prospective patients.
