Learn about “Freshwater Mussels of the Western Carolinas” at Landrum Library

LANDRUM–Conserving Carolina and the Landrum Library invite you to join them for a free lecture entitled, “Freshwater Mussels of the Western Carolinas: An Overview of Their Biology, Ecology, and Conservation,” presented by Hans Lohmeyer, freshwater ecologist and Conserving Carolina’s Stewardship Coordinator. The program will be held on Tuesday, June 13, at 6 p.m. at the Landrum Library at 111 East Asbury Drive in Landrum. 

Dive into the captivating world of the freshwater mussels that are found in the mountain and foothill regions of the Carolinas, as their biology, ecology, and pressing conservation concerns are explored. This engaging talk will offer a comprehensive overview of these remarkable creatures, exploring their unique life cycle, habitat preferences and the factors contributing to their alarming decline.

Attendees will enjoy a journey through the rivers and streams that serve as the home for these hidden gems. Discover the intricate relationship between freshwater mussels and their environment as we explore their vital role in maintaining water quality and stream bed stability. This presentation will also shed light on the challenges faced by freshwater mussels, focusing on factors that have led to their decline, including habitat degradation, pollution and changes in river flow patterns.
