Sheriff Wright said officers found a man holding a butcher knife who refused to follow their instructions. Despite attempts to subdue him using a taser and a K9 unit, the man continued to approach the officers.

Consequently, a Landrum police officer and two Spartanburg County deputies fired their weapons, resulting in the man’s death.

No police officers were injured during the incident.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office identified the woman as 53-year-old Shana McClain.

The suspect was identified as 58-year-old Freddie Edwards.

SLED is investigating the shooting. As standard procedure, the two Spartanburg County deputies have been placed on paid leave during the investigation.
