Wolverines in fifth after opening round of state 2A golf tournament

Polk County opened play Monday in the state 2A golf tournament with an aggregate score of 324, placing the team in fifth place.
The Wolverines finished a combined 36-over par in the first day of play at Longleaf Golf and Family Club, trailing East Surry by 35 strokes. The defending state champion Cardinals fired a remarkable 1-over par as a team and hold a 24-stroke lead over second-place Pine Lake Prep.
Seaforth (314) and Bandys (316) sit in third and fourth place.
Reilly Yoder led Polk’s effort, posting a 5-over-par 77. Yoder had two birdies on his card, those at the first and 18th holes.
Avery Harden finished with a 80, followed by Casey Beiler with an 83 and Evan Jones with an 84.
The tournament will conclude with another 18-role round on Tuesday. Jones will tee off at 10:40 a.m., with the remaining Wolverines to follow.
East Surry built its lead thanks to a pair of sub-70 rounds. Senior Connor Key posted a bogey-free 66 to take the individual lead while and teammate Pennson Badgett carded a 69 to sit tied for third and pace the Cardinals. Anderson Badgett and Jace Goldbach each turned in a 77 to round out the team score.
Pine Lake Prep received even-par rounds from Aiden Penhall and Cooper Mizelle to grab second in the team chase.
Farmville Central junior Holder Rucker overcame a bogey and a double bogey to post a four-under 68 and currently sits in second place. Beddingfield’s Nate O’Neal and Drew O’Neal are tied for third and fifth, respectively, thanks to rounds of 69 and 71 Bandys’ Atley Gabriel also finished under par on the day with a 71.
