As with so many games this season, Polk County had its opportunities Tuesday to possibly make Senior Day a victorious one.

But the Wolverines saw early scoring chances slip away, releasing pressure on visiting Brevard. And the Blue Devils responded by pulling away for an 11-3 victory in Polk’s regular-season home finale.

The two teams meet again Thursday in Brevard in what will be the season-ending game for Polk County (7-13, 2-9). The Blue Devils (13-6, 7-4) will advance to 2A playoff competition as a wild card.

The Wolverines trailed just 3-2 after three innings, but left five runners on base in those frames. Polk finished with nine runners left on base and had two other runners thrown out at second and third.

“We had many opportunities there early on and we just couldn’t capitalize,” said Polk County head coach Phillip Miller. “Had second and third with one out and didn’t score. Had bases loaded with one out and didn’t get much out of that.

“We had the opportunities and just couldn’t close them.”

Polk grabbed an early 1-0 advantage as Chloe Young doubled with one out and scored on Elizabeth Vitale’s infield grounder. Brevard answered with three runs in the second, but the Wolverines responded in the third with a run as Vitale and Amberlyn Scruggs singled, with Junie Mitchell’s two-out hit driving home Vitale.

The Blue Devils scored three more runs in the fourth to make it 6-2. Polk added its final run in the fifth on Katelyn Arrowood’s RBI single before Brevard put together a five-run rally in the sixth inning.

Arrowood, Scruggs and Kayleigh Wilson were honored before the game as Polk’s senior class.

“I hate it for the three seniors,” Miller said. “Hopefully we can send them out with a win on Thursday.”

Young continued her recent success at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort. Mitchell finished 2-for-3, with Vitale, Scruggs, Arrowood and Sarah Vitale each adding a base hit.
