R-S Central built an early five-run lead Tuesday en route to a 6-2 victory over Polk County in Mountain Foothills 7 Conference softball action in Rutherfordton.
The Hilltoppers improved to 12-3, 5-3 while the Wolverines dropped to 7-9, 2-5.
How it happened: R-S pushed across two runs in the bottom of the first, stringing together four hits, including two doubles and a triple.
The Hilltoppers added a run in the second and two more in the third to build that 5-0 lead. Another run in the fifth made it a 6-0 advantage.
Polk County threatened to score in the third as Mia Bradley and Chloe Young laced two-out singles, with Bradley reaching third, before the inning ended.
The Wolverines then broke through in the sixth. Young reached on an error to open the inning, with singles by Sarah Vitale and Elizabeth Vitale loading the bases. Katelyn Arrowood’s base hit scored Young, but Sarah Vitale was thrown out at home for the inning’s first out.
Junie Mitchell added an RBI later in the inning to drive in Elizabeth Vitale with Polk’s final run.
At the plate: Arrowood finished 2-for-3, with Young and Elizabeth Vitale each 2-for-4. Bradley and Sarah Vitale each had a hit.
Next up: The two teams meet again Friday at Polk in a 4 p.m. start.
