Polk County High School FFA’s annual plant sale is always a popular event for the community.

The sale traces its roots back to 1973 at Polk Central High School. Retired agricultural education teacher Richard Smith recently remembered how the sale began.

“The superintendent told me that it was one of the goals was to have a successful learning experience for students, and that’s what we did,” Smith said.

In 2023 at Polk County High School, the annual plant sale continues to fulfill that vision.

“Seeding, germination and growth take a few weeks, but the students take a lot of cuttings at the beginning of the school year to make new baskets,” said current agricultural education teacher Chauncey Barber.” We have a lot of fun preparing everything, and even more when people from our community show up and see the student’s hard work.”

The Polk County High School Agriculture and FFA Program will start this year’s annual plant sale on March 29. Plant lovers can attend the sale each weekday from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., and the same will be open during Polk County Schools’ spring break that runs April 7-14.

Flowers and vegetables are available in singles and flats. Additionally, there are assorted varieties of hanging baskets available as well.
