Polk County continued its unbeaten start to the 2023 season on Tuesday, handing R-S Central a 6-2 setback in a Mountain Foothills 7 Conference clash in Rutherfordton.
The Wolverines are now 6-0 overall, 2-0 in conference matches. The Hilltoppers fell to 2-3, 0-2.
How it happened: R-S Central opened with a solid first 15 minutes, but Polk County began to assert command of the match, and the scoreboard soon reflected that.
Caroline Taylor scored in the 20th minute, winning a kick from the R-S goalkeeper, dribbling past a defender and beating the keeper with a low drive. Susanna Ashworth then upped the lead to 2-0 some nine minutes later, taking a pass from Gabby Savaia and hitting a high drive that glanced off the keeper and into the net.
The Wolverines added two more first-half goals, those from Charley Dusenbury and Ella Waldman, with Waldman’s goal coming just a second before the halftime whistle.
The Hilltoppers scored early in the second half, but Polk responded as Jamilett Ramirez found the net off an Ashworth throw-in. Waldman scored again, this time off a Ramirez corner, before the Hilltoppers closed the scoring with a late goal.
Maggie McCammon had four saves before yielding the gloves to Maggie Johnson for the final 15 minutes.
Next up: Polk County concludes its four-match road trip on Monday with a conference game at Hendersonville.
