SOFTBALL: Polk returns to winning ways with five-inning rout of North Henderson

Polk County bounced back into the winner’s column on Thursday, thumping North Henderson 12-1 in a five-inning non-conference softball matchup at Polk.

The Wolverines improved to 3-2 with the victory. North Henderson dropped to 1-2.

How it happened: The Knights scored their run in the top of the first, but Polk County responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, Amberlyn Scruggs and Elizabeth Vitale laced back-to-back singles, with an error on Katelyn Arrowood’s grounder and Laney Littlefield’s run-scoring single making it 2-1, Wolverines.

The Wolverines added three runs in the second inning, then racked up seven runs in the third inning, setting the stage for the game to end by run rule in the fifth.

At the plate: Littlefield and Elizabeth Vitale each finished 3-for-3 for Polk, with Scruggs and Junie Mitchell each going 2-for-3. Sarah Vitale, Miya Jackson and Arrowood each added base hits.

Next up: Polk County begins Mountain Foothills 7 Conference play on Tuesday, traveling to Chase for a 6 p.m. game.
