Polk County earned a split Saturday of its two games in the Blackhawk Baseball Early Season Test at West Wilkes High School.

 

The Wolverines defeated Surry Central 10-6 before dropping a 7-1 decision to North Stokes. Polk County is now 2-1 after the day’s outcomes.

 

How it happened, Surry Central: Polk County built a 7-0 lead, then held off a late Surry Central surge to record the win.

 

Home runs from Angus Weaver and Karson Scruggs in the top of the second gave Polk an early 2-0 lead, and the Wolverines added a run in the third when Weaver was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

 

Polk then exploded for four runs in the fifth inning. Lawson Carter homered to open the inning before Alex Perry singled with one out and Avery Hensley and Scruggs walked to load the bases. Cohen Edwards’ infield single scored Perry, an error on Mason Beiler’s fly ball allowed Hensley to score and Gunnar Alm’s sacrifice fly plated Scruggs to give Polk a 7-0 lead.

 

Surry Central responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, three of those on Ty Lloyd’s home run. Polk answered with a run in the sixth and then two more in the seventh on Alex Tipton’s two-run homer.

 

At the plate: Weaver finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, with Carter, Scruggs and Edwards each adding two hits. Tipton, Noah Harden and Perry each had a hit. Carter and Weaver each added two stolen bases.

 

On the mound: Perry earned the win, allowing just one hit and striking out three in four innings. Scruggs and Edwards pitched the final three innings.

 

How it happened, North Stokes: Polk County ran into a buzzsaw in North Stokes senior pitcher Blaze Lawson, who struck out 15 and allowed just one unearned run in six innings.

 

The Wolverines trailed 1-0 after an inning, but evened the score in the top of the fourth. With one out, Perry was hit by a pitch, with Harden then singling with two outs. An error on an Edwards infield grounder then allowed Perry to score to even the game.

 

But with two outs in the fifth inning, the Vikings found an offensive groove, putting together five hits, two walks and a hit batter to score five runs. North Stokes added a run in the bottom of the sixth.

 

At the plate: Tipton finished 2-for-4, with Alm, Harden and Carter each adding a hit.

 

On the mound: Carter allowed three hits and one run in three innings, with Harden taking the loss in his 1 2/3 innings on the mound. Piercen Edwards pitched a scoreless third of an inning and Alm walked one, struck out one and allowed a run in one inning of work.

 

Polk County travels Tuesday to Landrum, with junior varsity action starting at 5 p.m. and the varsity to follow.
