Polk County’s defense kept Shelby in check Thursday, paving the way for a 1-0 victory in a non-conference girls soccer match in Shelby.
The Wolverines stand 1-0 with the season-opening win. Shelby dropped to 1-2.
Polk County withstood early aggressive play from the Lions, keeping the match scoreless at the half.
Polk’s offensive persistence was finally rewarded in the 68th minute as Hayden Blackwell took a pass from Gabby Savaia and fired a drive that deflected off both the goalkeeper and post before settling in the back of the net.
The Wolverine defense made the lead stand, with goalkeeper Maggie McCammon recording two saves.
“The defense and goalkeeper were key for us, keeping them off the scoreboard while we tried to find a way to get the ball in the back of the net,” said Polk County head coach Lennox Charles.
Polk County hosts Avery on Monday at 6 p.m. in the Wolverines’ home opener.
