Polk County raced to an early 10-run lead Monday and cruised to a season-opening 14-2 victory at Asheville in a non-conference softball matchup.

The game, stopped after five innings by run rule, served as the season debut for both squads.

The Wolverines took advantage of a rough day on the mound for Asheville pitching, drawing 15 walks with a handful of wild pitches.

Amberlyn Scruggs and Elizabeth Vitale had run-scoring singles in the first inning as Polk grabbed a 4-0 lead. The Wolverines then scored six times in the second inning, with Katelyn Arrowood’s two-run single joining six walks and a hit batter in that rally.

Scruggs added an RBI single in the third inning before Polk scored three runs in the fifth, with Kynley Lawter delivering an RBI single in the inning.

Mia Bradley matched a school record in the win, stealing five bases. She equals a record set in 1998 by Tonya Gossett and Hope Loudermelt. Bradley drew three walks and scored three runs.

Scruggs finished 2-for-2 with three RBI and scored two runs. Arrowood was 2-for-3 with two RBI, with Sarah Vitale, Elizabeth Vitale, Lawter and Kayleigh Wilson each adding hits.

On the mound: Sarah Vitale struck out the side in the first inning and held Asheville hitless until the fifth. She finished with eight strikeouts and allowed just two hits in the win.

Polk County is scheduled to travel Wednesday to Rosman for a 4 p.m. game.
