Polk County’s girls basketball team will once again take part in the state 2A playoffs.

 

The Wolverines (13-12) earned an at-large berth in the playoffs and will travel Tuesday to face Lincoln Charter in a first-round game according to unofficial pairings released Saturday by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.

 

Polk County is the 28th overall seed in the 2A West bracket. The Wolverines’ berth was assured when Brevard moved up to the 29th overall seed as Polk County, which finished fourth in the Mountain Foothills 7 Conference standings, could not qualify ahead of third-place Brevard.

 

It marks the third time in the past four seasons that Polk County has finished with a winning record and earned a playoff berth.

 

Lincoln Charter enters as the fifth overall seed in the 2A West bracket. The 20-4 Mustangs are led by seniors Maddie Lusk and Grace Rinaldo. Lusk (15.9 ppg) is the daughter of Belmont Abbey head women’s coach Kim Lusk and has committed to play for the Crusaders while the 6-0 Rinaldo (10.1 ppg, 7.3 rpg) has committed to play at Montreat College.

 

The Crusaders have won 13 straight games, their last loss on Dec. 17 to Victory Christian Center of Charlotte.
