John Phillip Canning was arrested after Polk County detectives received a tip that he was using social media to meet women online. After an investigation of the allegations, the detectives took Canning into custody.

A magistrate gave Canning a $6,000 bond, and Canning was released approximately two hours after being taken into custody.

Canning is currently out on parole from Florida after serving half of a 10-year sentence for multiple sex offenses.

“Thanks to a tip from the public and the work of our detectives, a predator will hopefully be off the streets soon,” said Polk County Sheriff Tim Wright Friday morning. “Sex offenders in Polk County will be held accountable, and any violation of the Sex Offender Registry will be investigated and charged.”

Sheriff Wright also showed gratitude to North Carolina Probation and Parole for their assistance in the case.
