Wolverines roll past winless Hilltoppers

A rebuilding R-S Central program made for a perfect foil Thursday for Polk County, the Wolverines rolling to a 51-9 victory in a Mountain Foothills 7 Conference girls basketball matchup at Polk.

The Wolverines improved to 11-8 overall and maintained hold of third place in the conference with a 6-3 record. The Hilltoppers, playing a number of freshmen, dropped to 0-18, 0-9.

The game was never close. Polk County raced to a 20-2 lead at the end of the third quarter, built the margin to 31-7 by halftime and led 45-9 by the end of the third period.

Wolverine head coach Brandy Alm was able to substitute liberally throughout the game, including playing all of Polk County’s junior varsity players who joined the varsity team at the start of the week.

The game marked the second team this season that Polk County held an opponent to a single-digit total.

Bailey Staton had 15 points, Mia Bradley had 11 and Kylie Lewis added 10 for the Wolverines.

Jayden Duncan scored seven points, with Brianna Gray adding six. Gavionna Carson finished with two points for the Wolverines.

Polk County will host Chase on Feb. 3 in the Wolverines’ final home game of the regular season.
