Polk County’s wrestling team kept alive its Mountain Foothills 7 Conference title hopes and assured itself a top-three MF7 finish with a pair of dual match wins Friday at Chase.

The Wolverines defeated Chase 48-30 and Patton 57-24 in the MF7 tri-match. Polk County’s dual meet record is now 12-12, but the Wolverines are now 4-0 in conference matches.

Polk County travels Tuesday to Hendersonville for a tri-match with the Bearcats and Patton. The Hendersonville encounter will be a conference match, with Polk then hosting league leader R-S Central on Jan. 25 as part of a tri-match with East Rutherford.

Patton forfeited six matches, so that contest provided Polk with a fairly easy win. The Chase match proved much more competitive, with the Trojans opening an early 12-0 lead.

But Shatter Johnson, Carson Bell and Mykah Hills began a run of five straight match wins for Polk County, that including a pin at 170 pounds from freshman Zalen McCraw, who moved up a weight class and scored that win.

“We had a good night,” said Polk County head coach Thomas Hensley. “Mykah Hills came in and got a big win for us. He took their guy down, he cradled him and he pinned him. That was huge for us.

“Our young kids continue to do well. It’s nice to see the continued improvement. I’m having a lot of fun working with this group.”
