The winner, Patrick Daniels, is a meter reader for the Town of Tryon who frequently visits the Tryon Food Store. Daniels took home $71,014 after required state and federal tax withholdings.

Daniels predicted his stroke of good luck to his wife on Wednesday night.

“I told her, ‘Tonight I’m going to win the lottery,’” he said. Incredibly, his prediction turned out to be true.

“I was dumbfounded,” said Daniels after realizing he had won. “I showed it to my wife so she could confirm it.”

“It couldn’t have been a better person to win,” Tryon Food Store owner Fahar Khan said. “He’s friendly and he works hard for his family and the Tryon community.”

Last year, Polk County education programs received $2.5 million raised by the North Carolina State Education lottery, including $1.3 million to help build an addition to Tryon Elementary School.
