R-S Central unleashed a first-half scoring flurry Wednesday, scoring four times in a 16-minute span en route to a 5-0 boys soccer victory over Polk County in G.M. Tennant Stadium.

The Hilltoppers (7-9-1, 4-5) tallied first in the 13th minute of the Mountain Foothills 7 matchup when Yordi Galvez took a throw-in deep in Polk’s end, maneuvered past a pair of defenders and fired a line drive into the opposite corner of the net for a 1-0 advantage.

Polk County (2-12, 2-4) showed no panic, though, pushing forward and creating scoring chances. Cole Pereira had a high drive stopped in the 16th minute. James Purtill hit a long free kick that was tipped away. The Wolverines had a chance with a ball near the back post that sailed high.

R-S Central began to build momentum in the 25th minute, though, when the Hilltoppers received a penalty kick after a foul in the box. Polk goalkeeper Cade Bright dove to his left and turned aside the penalty, but the ball rebounded back into the middle of the field, where R-S defender Dean Bates outraced everyone to the ball and slid it into the net for a 2-0 R-S lead.

The Hilltoppers scored again less than four minutes later on a Riley Coldren shot that curled just inside the upper right post, and Jackson Knox completed the barrage in the 30th minute with another goal.

A steady rain began falling just after Knox scored, lasting until the half.

Coldren added another goal in the second half to complete the scoring.

Polk County is set to be back in action on Wednesday, hosting Chase for a 6 p.m. matchup that will also mark Senior Night for the Wolverines.
