Lines damaged, 240 power outages

TRYON – At 8:02 on Tuesday morning, Tryon Fire Department was dispatched to a fallen tree on Melrose Avenue.

The large tree had fallen at the intersection of Melrose Avenue and Laurel Avenue. According to officials at Tryon Fire Department, the tree fell on power lines and brought down several lines and poles. The tree caused damage to three power poles and caused one to snap in two. Melrose Avenue is currently closed as Duke Energy is working to repair lines and replace several power poles.

Officials say that the incident caused about 240 power outages in the area. Because the tree was tangled in power lines, TFD was unable to remove the tree from the road. Duke Energy estimates the road will be open again around 1 p.m.

UPDATE****

Town officials told the Bulletin that the road was clear and power and utilities had been restored to the majority of residents as of Tuesday evening.
