Polk County’s football program kicked off fall practice Monday, dodging afternoon rain showers for a brisk workout on the school practice fields.
The Wolverines are gearing up for their August 19 season opener at Newton-Conover and have a series of events scheduled before that road trip.
Polk has decided to resurrect its midnight practice to mark the start of contact drills. During the first five days of practice, full contact is not allowed as players focus on conditioning and skills.
The Wolverines will hold a special teams practice on Friday at 7 p.m. in G.M. Tennant Stadium. The program will then hold Parents Night beginning at 8:30 p.m. in the field house adjacent to Tennant Stadium, with head coach Bruce Ollis meeting with families while players receive a snack and fluids.
At 11:59 p.m., the team will make its way back to Miller Field, then go through agility drills starting at midnight before beginning contact drills. The night will conclude with a controlled scrimmage.
The midnight practice will end no later than 1:30 a.m.
The start of contact drills will then lead into the team’s two preseason scrimmages, both also set for Tennant Stadium.
On August 10, Polk County will host East Henderson, Kings Mountain and Blue Ridge, S.C. for the Wolverine Jamboree, set to begin at 6 p.m. The jamboree will feature constant action on both ends of the field, with all four teams competing, two on each end.
On August 13, the Wolverines will host a six-team Battle of the Border, with three North Carolina teams facing three South Carolina squads in game-like conditions. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
Polk County will face Eastside, S.C., with Brevard battling Blue Ridge, S.C. and Owen meeting Landrum.
