The Polk County Extension 4-H summer classes will offer Poultry Club, Horse Club, crafts, Garden to Plate, DNA and Fingerprints, sewing, electricity, rocketry, and cooking.

Helen Blackwell, 4-H agent, says that the reason she puts on these summer classes is that some kids might suffer from summer learning loss after they are no longer engaged in school. She says that keeping them engaged and actively thinking helps them process the world around them.

Blackwell’s classes cater to different age groups, and there are no more than 15 students per 2-4-hour class.

The Polk County Extension 4-H summer classes have been an annual occurrence for at least 30 years, Blackwell says. Classes begin in July and will go until school starts back again.

“Seeing young people find their sparks and experience new things, as well as seeing the kids who grew up through 4-H, who grow up and go to college and major in that specific subject––it’s fun to watch them travel that educational journey,” Blackwell says.
