Saluda attraction celebrates 40th anniversary
SALUDA– On Saturday, May 14, Green River Cove Tubing Company began their 2022 season. It was a perfect day for tubing on the Green River and the crowd poured in to enjoy one of the best attractions Polk County has to offer.
This is a special year for owner, Wendell Gillespie, as he and his family celebrate the 40th anniversary of their family owned business. Gillespie recalls how the business first started in 1982, when he and his father started with just a pickup truck and only seven tubes.
“It’s been a ride. Me and dad started with a pickup and seven tubes and it was our job to keep everybody happy from then on,” Gillespie says. “Customer service and safety is our main priority. It has taken care of my family for three generations and I hope it does for many more.”
Wendell Gillespie is fully prepared for the season with a freshly graded gravel parking lot and hundreds of brand new tubes for locals and tourists to rent and float the Green River. Pressure washed shuttle buses drive customers to drop off points where they enter the river.
There are two options to choose from at Green River Tubing Company. For $10 a person you get a 3 mile tubing experience that takes approximately 2 – 2.5 hours and for $15 a person you get a 6 mile experience that takes about 4 – 4.5 hours.
Tubers can experience class 1 and class 2 rapids and children must be at least 42 inches tall to tube. Lifejackets, shoes, and sunscreen are recommended but not required. Lifejackets are provided as needed on a first come first serve basis. Alcohol is not allowed.
Green River Cove Tubing Company is located at 5200 Green River Cove Road in Saluda and is open only on weekends until Memorial Day. It will then operate seven days a week until the end of the season. It is open from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
