A strong pitching performance from senior Coble Cameron helped lift Polk County to a 5-2 victory Friday at Chase in Mountain Foothills 7 Conference play.

 

Cameron pitched six innings, striking out five and allowing five hits. He allowed two unearned runs in the sixth inning before giving way to Chan Barber, who pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the save.

 

Polk County (7-3, 4-2) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, loading the bases with one out on a Jackson Beiler single, Lawson Carter walk and Riley Searcy single. Karson Scruggs then drew a walk to score Beiler, but Chase pitcher Jackson Gowan got back-to-back infield grounders to escape further damage.

 

Polk added a run in the fourth as Carter smacked a leadoff double, took third on a Searcy sacrifice bunt and then scored on Scruggs’ infield groundout, making it 2-0.

 

The Wolverines then took command in the top of the fifth. Barber drew a leadoff walk, with a Chase error on Cameron’s grounder putting runners at first and second. Angus Weaver followed with a single to left that drove in Barber to make it 3-0.

 

A walk loaded the bases, and Carter drew another walk to make it 4-0. Weaver then scored with two outs on a passed ball to boost the lead to 5-0.

 

Chase (4-5, 2-2) scored its two runs in the sixth on a base hit and two Polk County errors.

 

The Trojans got two runners on base in the seventh with no outs, but Barber bore down with a strikeout, then induced two fly balls to center to end the game.

 

Scruggs had two RBI for Polk, with Evan Jones, Cameron, Weaver, Beiler, Carter and Searcy delivering the Wolverines’ six hits.

 

Polk County is slated to be in action on Wednesday, hosting North Henderson in a non-conference game.
