According to Tryon Fire Chief Josh Walton, the five-year-old boy fell and rolled about 40 feet off the trail.  The boy was not near the waterfall when he fell, and was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to polktrails.org, the Melrose Falls Trail is described as moderately difficult with some steep areas.  The website states, “This area is very beautiful, but please use caution (especially if hiking with children)––there is a steep drop here which could cause serious injury or death.”

Tryon Fire Department, Saluda Fire and Rescue, Polk County Rescue Squad and Polk County EMS responded to the incident.
