CAMPOBELLO—Spartanburg County District One Schools Superintendent Dr. Ron Garner was named the recipient of the Thomas A. Hatfield Lifetime Achievement Award recently.
The award is from the South Carolina Art Education Association and is given to someone who has demonstrated a life-long commitment to teaching and promoting art education.
Since Garner has been superintendent, 6 of District One’s 10 schools have been designated as Arts in Basic Curriculum and 4 designated as Distinguished Arts Program sites.
District One officials said Spartanburg One has added multiple arts specialists in music, band, theater, orchestra, visual arts and GT arts and dance.
Student artwork is recognized throughout the school system in principal art galleries as well as at Swofford Career Center.
Chapman and Landrum high schools have developed honors performing arts courses in chorus, orchestra and band.
District One also has partnerships with state and local arts organizations, including the Kennedy Center Partners in Education, Ballet Spartanburg, Chapman Cultural Center, the Tryon Fine Arts Center, Spartanburg Community Foundation, Polk County Community Foundation and the Peace Center for programs.
Dr. Garner was also the 2013 South Carolina Art Education Association Art Advocate of the Year and the 2016 recipient of the Ray Doughty Arts Integration Award by the South Carolina Alliance for Arts Education.
