Polk County’s Satchel McCoy and Tori Strickland each earned an individual title as six Wolverines reached the podium in their weight classes on Saturday at the Maroon Devil Invitational in Bryson City.
The individual success helped the Wolverines place sixth in the 13-team boys’ field. R-S Central won the team title, followed by Franklin and Coahulla Creek of Dalton, Ga.
McCoy won both of his matches in the 120-pound class by pin, including a second-period fall of R-S Central’s Maddox Elliott in the championship match.
Competing in the girls division, Strickland dominated the 106-pound class, winning all of her matches by pin.
Bryson McCraw at 152 pounds and Jacob Knighton at 170 pounds also battled into the championship matches in their weight classes, both returning home with second-place showings. Shatter Johnson and Collier Foster also had top-four finishes to earn spots on the podium.
The Wolverines are scheduled to compete again on Wednesday at the North Knight Invitational at North Henderson High School. Wrestlers from some 20 schools representing three states are expected to compete in the event.
