CARY– Kathy Whitmire Romeo of Cary, NC, passed away on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at Solace Center in Asheville, NC. 

Born on August 21, 1953, in Tryon, NC, Kathy was the daughter of Grover C. Whitmire of Sunny View, NC, and the late Inez Cothran Whitmire.  She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Albert Romeo, and survived by her children, Paul S. Romeo of Virginia Beach, VA, Gina A. Romeo and her husband Shawn of Charlotte, NC, Matthew C. Romeo and his wife Rainey of Raleigh, Jordan W. Romeo and his wife Olya of Cary, NC; and three grandchildren, Andy Hoctor, Karli Hoctor, and Max Romeo.  Also, surviving are her siblings, Karen W. Copley and her husband Walker of Spartanburg, SC, Glenn C. Whitmire and his wife Sheila of Sunny View, NC, Carol W. Harwell and her husband Rick of Gastonia, NC, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who all loved her very much.  She made each one of us feel special and loved. 

Kathy attended Sunny View Elementary, Polk Central High School, where she was valedictorian, and Wake Forest University, graduating cum laude in religion and politics in 1971.  After college, she moved to Raleigh, NC, married Paul and reared her family there. They attended First Baptist Church, Raleigh, where Kathy spent years as a preschool teacher, preschool director, and then Sunday School teacher for the children’s “Creeper” class for many years.  She also volunteered her time to help several church ministries.

Kathy was a bookseller for Barnes and Noble and manager of the Children’s Book Section in Cary and then Briar Creek, NC.  A voracious reader, Kathy loved every kind of book from The Federalist Papers and How to Learn Japanese to theology and fantasy fiction. She was an interesting, compassionate, loving, faithful, wise, and much-loved woman.  She will be missed.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 30th, 11:00 am, at Coopers Gap Baptist Church, Mill Spring, NC with Reverend Donald Hollifield officiating.

The family will receive friends prior to the service Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church. 

A memorial service will also be held at FBC, Raleigh, NC, at a later date. 

In remembrance of Kathy, memorials may be made to Samaritan’s Purse, St Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or Mercury One.
