Vienna Piano Trio

This concert is part of the trio’s Farewell Tour of North America and the last opportunity to hear this remarkable ensemble in our area. Founded in 1988 by the Viennese pianist Stefan Mendl, the group includes American violinist David McCarroll and Austrian cellist Clemens Hagen. Known for their commitment to expanding the piano trio repertoire, the ensemble performs masterworks from earlier centuries as well as contemporary pieces.

Recent performances include such venues as the Vienna Konzerthaus, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Konzerthaus Berlin, Wigmore Hall London, and Cité de la Musique in Paris. The trio has participated in festivals around the world, including Wiener Festwochen, Mozartwoche Salzberg, Flanders, Aix-en-Provence, and Caramoor in New York. American venues include Lincoln Center, The Frick Collection, 92nd St. Y, Kennedy Center and Library of Congress.

The trio’s discography is impressive. They have recorded piano trios of Brahms, Dvořák, Saint-Saens, Schubert, Beethoven, Ravel, and Schumann, to name but a few. Their playing has been described by the Washington Post as “a rapport that makes the performance feel like a conversation among friends….”

The program for their Tryon concert includes two works by Schubert, including his Piano Trio No. 1 in B-flat Major, D. 898, Op. 99. The other Schubert work was not made available by press time. Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 49, rounds out the program.

David McCarroll plays a 1761 Gagliano violin and Clemens Hagen plays a Stradivari cello from 1698.
