South Carolina Department of Transportation reopens road Thursday

LAKE LANIER—Drivers can once again cross the dam at Lake Lanier after the state reopened the bridge on Thursday.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation, who owns the road and the bridge, advised Tryon officials Thursday that they would reopen the bridge Thursday with load restriction signs posted.

The state closed the bridge a couple of weeks ago until engineers did an additional inspection.

The state said a few years ago it would close the road in the future after engineers did an inspection of the bridge.

The town recently had engineers do an inspection of the dam, as required by the state, and once the SCDOT got that report, which included that the bridge has issues, the state closed the road until further notice.

The bridge is located on West Lakeshore Drive. People had to access West Lakeshore Drive from South Trade Street to Jervey Road and Calendonia Road to West Lakeshore during the closure.
