Nina Simone, Tryon Arts and Crafts plan events May 1

TRYON—People who want to gather outside for free events this weekend have the opportunity on Saturday, May 1. 

A groundbreaking ceremony and concert will be held at the Nina Simone Plaza downtown. The Nina Simone Project is hosting a celebration of the completion of the plaza, a groundbreaking for the Nina Simone archive and a concert Saturday. The plaza, located in downtown Tryon, has just completed bricks. The ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m., with the groundbreaking at noon and the concert from 1-4:30 p.m.

The Tryon Arts and Crafts School is also hosting  “Art of the Flame,” which is an Appalachian outdoor field day. The festivities will include games, BBQ, craft demonstrations and live music. The “Art of the Flame” will be from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Tryon Arts and Crafts School, located adjacent to Harmon Field at 373 Harmon Field Rd., Tryon.
