GREEN CREEK – Jerry Wayne Shields, age 79 of Green Creek, North Carolina, died Saturday, March 6, 2021 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.  Wayne was born on December 18, 1941 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina and was a son of the late Horace Elzie Shields and Ola Lee Shields. 

Wayne was for many years the owner and operator of Green Creek Farm Supply as well as a fertilizer sales representative.  He was also a peach farmer and cattle farmer.  An avid outdoorsman, he loved camping, boating, hunting, fishing and John Deere tractors.  He was also a longtime member of Sandy Springs Baptist Church. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lee Shields, his infant brother, Steven Shields, brother, Herman Shields, and sisters, Juanita Oliver, Esther Adkins, and Dorothy Morgan.

Survivors include his son, Terry Wayne Shields and wife Cindy of Green Creek, his daughter, Diane Shields Yelton and husband Greg of Green Creek, his sisters, Ethel Godfrey of the Shiloh Community, and Brenda Joines and husband Johnny of Green Creek.  There are also two grandchildren, Timothy Neal Yelton and wife Ashley, Matthew Wayne Yelton and wife Whitney, and his great-grandchildren, Hayden Yelton, Laylah Yelton, Mia Yelton, Cooper Yelton and Declan Yelton, and his special friend, Jane Waters of Rutherfordton.

The funeral service will be held at 3 o’clock Wednesday, March 10, 2021 in the Sandy Springs Baptist Church with Reverend Terrell Dillingham and Reverend Phil Bailey officiating.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:45 at the church prior to the service.
