PCHS to miss 1A volleyball playoffs due to Covid

Polk County High School will not participate in the state 1A volleyball playoffs due to a positive Covid-19 test within the program.

School officials on Saturday informed the North Carolina High School Athletic Association of the positive result, which will require all team members to quarantine until Jan. 15 per protocols established by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Polk County Department of Public Health and the NCHSAA.

The playoffs are scheduled to begin Tuesday, with the second round on Thursday, and end Jan. 23 with the state championships in Cary.

Polk County is expected to be one of more than a dozen playoff-qualifying teams across the state who will miss the postseason due to Covid-related issues.

The 2020 volleyball regular season began in November, delayed by the pandemic. Polk County was forced to reschedule a handful of games in mid-December due to a positive test within the program.

The Wolverines finished the regular season 10-0, both the first undefeated season in school history and the fewest number of games played in any season. Polk County won its seventh straight conference championship and 12th in school history.
