There’s often nothing more important to a child than having meals available when school is not in session.

Many Polk County Schools students rely on the daily breakfast and lunch provided by the school system – which is why the district is making sure those meals will be available during the upcoming holiday break.

On Thursday, Polk County Schools’ food service program will be sending home five days’ worth of meals to all students in grades pre-kindergarten through eight. Each student will receive five breakfast meals and five lunch meals consisting of shelf-stable or frozen food and milk. The food items will be placed in a drawstring bag and milk will be distributed in half-gallons.

For those students who will be traveling home on Thursday afternoon by car, they will receive their meals as they exit school. For students riding a bus, the district will have adults riding the buses that afternoon to help younger students get home with their meals. If a student goes to a location other than home in the afternoon, please make sure they can safely store the milk until they can get it home.

For students who are not in school on Thursday or for high school-age students who would like to receive the meals, those can be picked up at the regular district meal distribution on Thursday. That distribution takes place from 4-6 p.m. at the Polk County Schools Bus Garage in Columbus and at Sunny View Elementary School.

Hopefully these meals will help students and families have access to meals over the holidays. The district encourages all families to be on the lookout for the meals on Thursday.
