COLUMBUS, NC – Phyllis Ann Bird, a loving mother, grandmother and great-
grandmother, passed away on Saturday, October 3 rd after a brief illness.
Phyllis was born in Bellaire, Ohio, on August 3rd, 1929 (to the late Mary Margaret
Kelly). She completed a degree in journalism from Kent State University and spent
much of her adult life in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she raised four children and
later worked at the Racquet Club of Indianapolis. There she played tennis until she
retired. She finally moved to Columbus, NC, which she considered one of the most
beautiful places on earth.
Phyllis had many artistic talents and explored countless outlets for her creativity,
through classes at Tryon Arts and Crafts and the John C. Campbell Folk School. She
showered her family and friends with gifts of her detailed and thoughtful jewelry, pen
and ink drawings, enamelling, glass beading, and metalwork.
Her patience, generosity, compassion, and good humor serve as examples for all
who knew and loved her. She is remembered and missed dearly.
She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Bird Jr. and is survived by her children:
Karen Bird (John Lane), Steve Bird (Nancy), Amy Bird (Chris Yaroch), and John Bird
(Shari Wallace), seven grandchildren: Robert Spinks (Ali), Adriann Glunz (Ryan),
Maddie Spinks, Margaret Dufficy (Marty), Quentin Spinks, Hollyn Hartlep, and John
Paul Bird, and five great-grandchildren: Rosie, Emerson, and Bogart Glunz, Avery
Spinks, and Juniper Spinks.
A celebration of life service will be held privately. Memorial donations may be made
