A grant from the Polk County Community Foundation typically allows Polk County High School’s Farm Internship Program to employ multiple students during the summer months.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, though, brought a number of local and state guidelines that made it impossible for PCHS to conduct its summer program in a normal manner. Bringing in students not part of staff families, for example, wasn’t allowed.

But PCCF and the internship program found a solution – Chan Barber, son of PCHS Agricultural Education Instructor Chauncey Barber, served as this year’s intern.

The younger Barber spent hours on the PCHS campus, caring for and feeding animals plus maintaining the school vegetable gardens, muscadine vineyard, blue berries and the grounds at the school farm.

The Polk County High School Agricultural Education Program is grateful to the Polk County Community Foundation for its flexibility with this year’s program and to Chan for his hard work throughout the summer.
