Youth group sends love to seniors

Unity in the Community holds drive-thru for the Meeting Place

Staff Report

COLUMBUS—Unity in the Community held a drive-thru care package giveaway at the Meeting Place Senior Center this week, sending love and essential items to Polk County’s senior citizens.

The drive-thru was done on Tuesday, with youth from Unity in the Community sending smiles and waves to seniors who were there to pick up their daily lunches.

The Meeting Place Senior Center, located on Carmel Lane in Columbus has been closed for months because of the COVID-19 pandemic for seniors.

Meeting Place officials said they are making calls each week to Polk’s seniors to give them some social interaction as everyone misses each other.

On Tuesday, seniors were handed gift bags with essential items, including facemasks, hand sanitizer and herbal tea.

Unity in the Community youth spent this summer collecting donations to give to seniors in the county.

Unity in the Community plans to host more drive through giveaways at local churches and are accepting donations.
