Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Tryon’s own 68-year-old Book Shelf is moving to the Jackson Building next to The Bottle.

The Book Shelf, under the new ownership of Tryon native, Nicki Calhoun Truluck, plans to re-open by the end of August. Opening date and celebration will be announced soon.

Nicki’s older sister, Julia Calhoun, remembers when Lucy Kerby opened the bookstore in 1952. It was housed in the lower level of the large white house which was located on the site of the present Bank of America building. The house’s upper level was the home of Dr. John Preston’s medical office. The bookstore was actually at street level and faced Pacolet Street. Many remember Mrs. Kerby’s card table that was usually set up outside the entrance, standing ready for a round of bridge. She was a true master of the game.

Several years later, the Kerbys built a new structure next to “the old Post Office,” (currently Andy Haynes law offices). The bookstore remained there for many years until moving to its most recent North Trade Street location.

Stay tuned for the re-opening date.
