COVID-19 case shuts down main county offices

COLUMBUS—A positive case of COVID-19 at the Womack building in Columbus has caused the county offices to be shut down until further notice.

County officials alerted the public of the closure Thursday afternoon.

County officials said they closed the offices to the public until further notice based on recommendations by public health officials.

Residents are urged to call the individual department needed by telephone to get specifics on how to gain access. Appointments can be taken if necessary.

The Womack building houses the main county offices and is located across from the Polk County Courthouse in downtown Columbus.

The offices include the county manager’s office, human resources, the Register of Deeds office, the finance office, the board of elections office and emergency management. The building is also where the county board of commissioners meet twice a month, with the next meeting scheduled for Monday, Aug. 3.

Some court sessions are also held in the Womack building as well as planning board meetings and board of adjustment meetings.

It was unknown as of press time when the offices will reopen.
