20 boats participate in annual Lake Lanier 4th of July parade
LAKE LANIER—This year’s annual boat parade to celebrate the 4th of July brought one of the biggest participations in history with 20 boats registering.
This year’s event, held on the lake Saturday afternoon, was in memory of former Captain Bill Jones, who passed away July 3, 2019.
Lake families decorate their boats in red, white and blue, meet at the Tea House dock and parade around the lake’s 3 basins twice. Judges were equipped with numbered paddles to determine the winners. This year, the Jensen family took first prize, the Williams family took second prize, the Campbell family took third prize and the Rogers family took fourth prize.
“All participants and winners showed their enthusiasm for the event and many say that it was the best boat parade in years,” said Lake Lanier Civic Association’s Carol Foreman Whaley.
Prizes came from local businesses who offered certificates for the event, including the Hare and Hound, Sidestreet, Harper’s Eatery & Pub and the LLCA.
“Hopefully our neighbors will visit those places soon,” Whaley said. “I agree with those that have voiced that it was the best boat parade in years.”
Jones was the original promoter of the annual boat parade and this year, Grant Burns stepped up to take over captain. Burns, his wife Julie and the Burns family participated this year as judges and agreed to captain the event next year.
