Being a Rotary Club member means you are interested in providing service to your community, but it also means you are part of group that is accustomed to meeting weekly. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Rotary Club of Tryon is adapting by moving their weekly meetings online.
Club members knew that Rev. Dr. Allan Purtill had a daytime job as the Pastor at Tryon Presbyterian Church, but we didn’t know he was a tech guru in the off hours. Shortly after the Club’s meetings were cancelled by the Governor, Allan offered to use his technical skill to host our weekly meetings online.
The club tries to keep some of the same meeting traditions from the in-person meetings going while online. Each meeting starts with a prayer, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, Club News, Happy Dollars, a guest speaker and we always end with Rotary’s Four Way Test.
Last week, the Rotary members were very fortunate to have Josh Kennedy, the Polk County Health and Human Services Director, as our guest speaker. Josh shared information about the County’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic. During the presentation, the members learned about the different types of masks available and when each should be used. We also learned about the number of Covid-19 cases in Polk County and the availability of drive-up testing.
The Rotary Club of Tryon members were fortunate to have these speakers in previous weeks.
- George Alley (Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry) – discussed TBOM’s work to provide food and financial support to families in need.
- Dr. Fred Hartley (retired OB/GYN) – discussed his career as it related to Rotary’s theme of Maternal and Child Health.
- Dave Scherping (Polk County Schools) – discussed the school systems’ food distribution & emergency childcare programs.
The Rotary Club of Tryon is adapting to our situation well. We may not be meeting in person, but we are still working to support our communities through Service.
