MILL SPRING—After being rescheduled last year because of heavy rains, this year’s Steeplechase is canceled because of the Coronavirus, or COVID-19.

Tryon International Equestrian Center made the announcement over the weekend.

“In a continued effort to keep a safe and healthy place for our guests and team, we are making additional adjustments to our 2020 schedule,” said TIEC COO Sharon Decker. “in alignment with the USEF 30-day guidelines, we are canceling equestrian competitions beginning March 14, 2020 to include the TIEC Welcome Series.”

Tryon Resort restaurants and lodging will remain open to the public with the addition of proactive and extra-rigorous sanitation practices, Decker said.

Events canceled at TIEC include the Tryon Block House Races pre-party on April 10 and the Steeplechase on April 11; the Fork at TIEC Eventing Competition April 2-6 and the Carolina Classic at TIEC Reining competition May 6-10.

Layover stalls and onsite lodging are available at lodging@tryon.com or stabling@tryon.com or by calling 828-863-1015.

Decker also said decisions about future competitions and events will be made as new information becomes available and that people can visit the website for the latest information.

The Steeplechase was moved from FENCE to the equestrian track a few years ago. Last year the Steeplechase had to be postponed until October because heavy rains caused damage to the track.

The Steeplechase has been occurring since 1947.

Decker said over the weekend the Steeplechase will be canceled and not rescheduled this year. She said there is just too much uncertainty and rescheduling at this point would be very difficult.
