Polk’s children in custody increases over last decade
MILL SPRING—Polk County’s children in state custody increased from 22 children in 2010 to 51 and 39 children in foster care in 2018 and 2019.
The Polk County Board of Commissioners was recently presented its annual audit report for fiscal year 2018-2019, which ended June 30, 2019. The report includes statistical information regarding the county and its departments over the last decade.
Between 2010 and 2013, Polk County’s children in state custody remained steady at 22, 24, 20 and 21 children each year. In 2014, there were 17 children in foster care and then in 2015 that number jumped to 33 children in state custody.
In 2017, there was another jump by 21 children in one year with 51 children in foster care in 2017, compared to 30 children in foster care in 2016, according to the audit report. That number remained at 51 children in 2018 and dropped to 39 children in foster care in 2019, according to the audit report.
