DHEC involved over mice droppings found at Ingles

LANDRUM- The Ingles located at 1851 Highway 14 in Landrum had a bit of a rough start to the month of thankfulness and giving.

On November 7, a complaint was made to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) from shoppers who believed they had seen mice droppings on some of the shelves inside the store. DHEC officials, along with Ingles management, were made aware of issues being seen throughout the store.

Ingles Market management did not have a comment on the issue other than confirming the complaints made in early November were true.

Once DHEC was made aware of the complaint, a complete and thorough inspection was done throughout the entire store. The inspection did indeed confirm that mice droppings were found inside the store, specifically on some of the shelves.

Laura Renwick from DHEC media relations shared that the complaint was filed on November 7th.

On the retail food establishment report, the store received a 98 out of 100, with two points being deducted for the droppings.

The entry where the points were deducted, number 36, states, Insect and Rodents not present; no unauthorized animals, found feces within the store.

According to Renwick, Ingles management shared with DHEC the store will be treated by a pest control company every other day but did not confirm for how long.

The name of the pest control company was provided DHEC, showing proof the store is working to fix the issue. According to the inspection report, the pest control company being used to fix the mice issue is Ecolab, a company headquartered in Minnesota.

Renwick followed up by saying that DHEC will conduct another inspection at a future date but did not specify how long Ingles has to fix the issue and did not give a tentative date as to when the follow up inspection will be held.
