At the August 22nd meeting of the Rotary Club of Tryon, members heard about the results of the Alzheimer’s research from Denise Young.

Ms. Young is the Regional Manager of the Western Carolina Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. During the presentation, Rotarians were educated about the causes of Alzheimer’s disease and how they can help researchers through participation in clinical trials. The Alzheimer’s Association’s Trial Match program connects Alzheimer’s disease researchers with both patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and healthy individuals.

Alzheimer’s Association Community Volunteer Ralph Miller, Rotary Club President Stacey Lindsay, Alzheimer’s Association Regional Manger Denise Young Rotarians also learned about the importance of talking with their doctor if they notice some of the 10 early warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease:

 

1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life
2. Challenges in planning or solving problems
3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks
4. Confusion with time or place
5. Trouble understanding visual images or spatial relationships
6. New problems with words in speaking or writing
7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
8. Decreased or poor judgement
9. Withdrawal from work or social activities
10. Changes in mood and personality.

 

The Rotary Club of Tryon supports research to cure Alzheimer’s disease through donations to the Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust (CART). The CART program was stared in 1995 by the Rotary Club of Sumter South Carolina and has donated over $8 million dollars toward Alzheimer’s research.
